The UFC returns to Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 3 for UFC 230. UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier makes his return to the Octagon since winning the UFC heavyweight title in July. In the main event of UFC 230, Cormier will make his first title defense against Derrick Lewis, who earned the title shot after a come from behind knockout of Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.
The main card of UFC 230 is filled with four middleweight fights that could flip the division upside down. Former champion Chris Weidman faces Ronaldo Souza, who replaced Luke Rockhold, who pulled out of the fight with an injury. Both Weidman and Souza are coming off of fights against Kelvin Gastelum. Weidman submitted Gastelum, while Souza lost a split decision. The winner of Saturday’s fight could be next in line for a title shot against current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
Seventh-ranked middleweight David Branch was originally supposed to fight Souza. However, Branch will now face Jared Cannonier after Souza replaced Rockhold. Branch is coming off of a first-round knockout of Thiago Santos. Cannonier has lost three of his last four fights and is desperately in need of a win.
The pay-per-view opens with seventh-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson fights undefeated Israel Adesanya. Brunson has won two of his last three fights but is coming off of a loss against Souza in his last fight. Adesanya is 14-0 and has won two performance of the night bonuses in his last three fights.
